Pilot Profiles

Pilots at Boulder Air Tours have years of professional backcountry flying experience. They also have exceptional knowledge of the Boulder area and of an impressive variety of outdoor pursuits.

Andy Young

 Andy Young

Andy has called Boulder “home base” since 1984.  While he has traveled and worked in many places around the world (including 20 stints in Antarctica) Boulder is the place he always comes back to.  He has been flying for over 20 years, with a particular focus on mountain and backcountry (often called “bush”) flying.

Since 2010, his professional work, when not flying for Boulder Air Tours, has focused on flying people into, out of, and around the backcountry of Alaska.  He has also flown for environmental organizations in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica and Canada (in addition to the United States).

Andy is a rock climber, mountaineer, skier, and motorcyclist as well, and is intimately familiar with the pursuit of these activities in the Boulder area.  As such, he is uniquely qualified to show you some of the best spots for these activities from the air.

Nathan Kurth

Nathan is a Colorado native who grew up in the mountains. He has flown out of Boulder for 10 years.

Pilot, Nathan Kurth

He has a degree in Aerospace Science, and does IT work for Jeppesen/Boeing in addition to flying for Boulder Air Tours. He has spent his entire aviation career flying in and around the Rocky Mountains, piloting everything from small aircraft to corporate jets. He focuses primarily on mountain and backcountry/bush flying, both as a pilot and an instructor.

Nathan is an accomplished skier (including backcountry skiing) and also enjoys mountaineering, mountain biking, climbing, rafting, camping, motorcycling, and photography.

Doedo (Dew-Dough) Schipper

Doedo Schipper

Doedo is originally from the Netherlands and started flying planes at age 15. He is a certificated instructor in gliders, single and multi-engine airplanes, and instrument flying. He has been flying scenic rides in Boulder since 1997. He is an experienced mountain wave pilot that has flown gliders over Boulder as high as 23,000 feet. He has worked as a Registered Nurse in emergency departments in New York City and as a flight nurse on a Lear Jet here in Colorado.

He and his wife, Gail fly the occasional airshow and aerobatic competition in their Bucker Jungmann, an open-cockpit World War II vintage biplane, which they restored in the colors of the Netherlands air force. He is fluent in English, Dutch and German.
